Choosing the Right HVAC System for Your Home

by | Dec 17, 2014 | Heating and Air Conditioning

Your HVAC system works to remove unwanted and potentially harmful particulates from your home’s air. This major appliance, on average, has a useful life of 10 to 15 years. When this system becomes too defective, it’s advisable to get a new HVAC system. When Choosing the Right HVAC System, use the following guidelines.

Before you start looking or a new HVAC system, calculate the square footage of every room you will air condition. Measure the length and width of the room. Multiply these two numbers to arrive at the square footage of the room. If you have a room that is not square or rectangular, divide the room into triangle shapes. To find the square footage of each triangle with equal sides, find the product of multiplying the height and the width by 50%. If any triangle has unequal sides, measure all three sides. Add these three numbers together and divide by 2. Next, perform three separate calculations using the number 2. Subtract the length of each side of the triangle from the number 2. Multiply these three numbers together. You will then need to multiply this number by 2. Find the square root of this product. This will give you the square footage of an uneven triangle. Add the square footage of the different triangles together to arrive at the total square footage of the room. The square footage of all rooms should be added together. This is the amount of space you will have to provide air conditioning for.

When Choosing the Right HVAC System, remember to select one large enough to cool adequately and heat your home. Having too big of an HVAC system will cost you money in wasted energy. Using one too small will force the unit to run longer than necessary. This will run up your energy costs and can reduce the useful life of your HVAC system. Ensure that you purchase a system with an Energy Star label on it. This designation will let you know that the machine passes guidelines set forth by the United State Environmental Protection Agency.

Getting a new HVAC system is a major investment. Take your time and do your research so you can find one right for your needs and budget.
