Many people who own older homes, such as Victorians, like to restore and decorate them in the same style they were when originally built. One decorative element originally used in older homes that is gaining popularity again is the tin ceiling. In the 1880s, tin ceilings in Long Island, NY, were not only used to as a way to decorate a room, they were also used as a fire protection measure. Since cooking, heating, and lighting a home was accomplished primarily with open flames in the late 1880s, tin ceilings helped keep fires from spreading.
