How to Get the Most from Your Air Conditioning in Phoenix

March, 2014 by Alma Abell

Almost 1.5 million people have decided that Phoenix is a great place to live. Can’t blame them either — there’s always something to do. Sports lovers follow the Diamondbacks and the Cardinals, hikers enjoy Camelback Mountain, the Heard Museum has wonderful exhibits for the culturally inclined and the kids all love the Phoenix Zoo.

Phoenix has another attraction that everyone is not so fond of: heat. Lots of heat. There are usually 4-5 months in the summer when the temperature goes above 100 degrees. For the rest of the year, what’s not to like, but summer — that separates the men from the boys, so to speak. Summer does keep the air conditioning guys (and ladies) busy — people who live in Phoenix can handle the heat, but the heat belongs outdoors, not in the house.
Here are a few tips to help the A/C unit run efficiently when it’s really hot outside.

* Change filters often. If there are pets in the house, change even more frequently. Clean filters are the best thing that can be done for the A/C unit and your wallet.

* Check to make sure that the fan setting is ‘Fan On’, not ‘Fan Auto’. When the indoor fan runs non-stop, most people find that they can set the thermostat 1-2 degrees warmer and still feel comfortable.

* Don’t turn off the A/C when you leave the house for the day. When you get home again, the A/C will work hard to cool the house again, but it will take several hours. It’s much better to raise the thermostat 5-10 degrees.
Many homes in warm areas do not have enough insulation. More insulation really helps keep the home cooler. A working attic fan is also recommended.

* Most homes have ceiling fans, but not everyone realizes that in the summer, fans should blow air down. In the winter, reverse the fan to blow air up and run the fan at a lower speed.
